What do you think self-love is? I’ll give you a hint. It isn’t vanity, confidence, self-care, or rewarding yourself for a job well done.

The media has created an idea of self-love that can be overwhelming, and to be honest, dangerous. In Episode 18 of The Resilient Type podcast, I share what self-love really is.

Today, I chat to self-love advocate, Laura Maloney of theselfset.com. Laura’s mission is to cut out the shame, and add self-compassion to self-improvement.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • What self-love is and why it’s important
  • Why it’s so hard to love ourselves
  • 3 ways to start building self-love
  • If you need to love yourself before you can love other people

Wondering how self-love relates to resilience? Research from the University of Arizona (2012) found that having more self-compassion helped people build resilience. More specifically, it helped them recover quicker from trauma and separation, and cope better with embarrassment and failure.
